The Navigator

Description

Here you can see my father navigating a ship.  His documentation validated him as an employee of Clarke Steamship company.  My favourite document is the letter of reference which identified my father as recommended for being “sober, labourious, and trustworthy”.  His career as a navigator was cut short, after a trip on another steam ship called the SS. Gulfport.  He worked a long winter season from Oct 1953 – May 1954, which turned out to be particulary gueling as the ice floes and high winds where exceptional that winter. My father suffered significantly from sea-sickness that year, and upon returning home, his doctor suggest he leave his career behind, as his stomach would not recover.  Such a disappointment he must have felt, or was it relief?
